Originating in Italy, the Chianina is one of the world's oldest and largest cattle breeds. Once used primarily as a draught animal, it is now highly valued for its exceptional beef quality and crossbreeding potential. With its distinctive white coat and black skin pigmentation, the Chianina is known for rapid growth, lean muscle, and impressive stature.
Modern breeding has focused on meat production, selecting animals with longer bodies, shorter limbs, and well-developed rumps and thighs. Key traits include fast growth rates, high meat yield, and strong maternal ability.
Chianina cattle are truly giants of the bovine world. Mature bulls typically reach up to 1.8 metres at the shoulder and can weigh well over 1,600 kilograms, with some exceeding 2 metres in height. The legendary bull Donetto holds the world record at 1,740 kilograms and 1.85 metres tall. Cows generally weigh between 800 and 1,000 kilograms, and calves are born strong, often exceeding 50 kilograms at birth.
